What is harmonic mixing?

Mixing tracks whose keys sit next to each other on the Circle of Fifths (or Open Key / Camelot), so the change of song does not clash. PowerBox DJ analyzes key, then the Key Filter shows compatible keys and cuts the library to them.

Does PowerBox DJ mix in key automatically?

No. It analyzes key and BPM, and it filters the list to keys you select. Auto mix fades the playlist you built. You still choose the next track, or you build that list. Relative Songs shows neighbours by key and measure.

Harmonic mixing

Harmonic mixing is picking the next track in a key that sits next to the one you are in, so the room does not wince. PowerBox DJ analyzes key and BPM, then the Key Filter is a Circle of Fifths you click. Open Key with offset. Sharp and flat auto measure. The library shrinks to those keys. You still pick the song.

It does not secretly rewrite the playlist into perfect fifths. Auto mix plays the list you built and can beat-match the fade. Harmonic mixing here is see the key, filter to neighbours, play. That is professional DJ software doing analysis, not a magic button.

What the words mean

Key — the tonic and major/minor of the track, from analysis. Written as a musical key and as Open Key (the Camelot-style numbers a lot of DJs actually click).

Circle of Fifths — keys a fifth apart sit next to each other. Neighbours mix. Jumping a tritone often does not. The Key Filter draws that circle. You select two, three, four keys. The grid keeps those rows.

Open Key with offset — Open Key is 1d/1m through 12d/12m. Offset lets you include keys a step away, not only the exact neighbour, when the floor will take it.

Sharp and flat auto measure — the analyzer decides the spelling so you are not maintaining two names for one pitch class.

Signature — 4/4, 3/4, 6/8 and the rest. Beat skip and loops count beats from that grid. A waltz is not a four-count loop unless you change the signature.

How to work with it

1. Analyze the library. BPM, key, signature land on the song. Until that runs, the Key Filter has nothing to click.

2. Open Key Filter. Click the keys that fit the track that is on. Two keys is a tight mix. Four is a wider floor. Then add audio-feature ranges if you also care about energy or danceability — that is the last screenshot on the Key Filter page.

3. Live Brushes can colour the Key column so you read compatibility without opening the wheel every time. Filter Sets hide; brushes highlight. Use both if you want a short list that is still painted.

4. Relative Songs is “songs close to this one, by key and measure.” Use it when the wheel is too much and you only want neighbours of the row you are on.

5. In fPlayer you can pitch-shift key without changing tempo, per stem or on the whole track, if the next song is a semitone off and the room will not wait. That is a correction, not harmonic mixing. Harmonic mixing is picking a neighbour. Pitch shift is forcing a match.
